About Your Appointment

Your first appointment with me will last for up to an hour and a half. Any follow-up appointments will last for around an hour.
When you first come in, I will talk to you in detail about the problem you have and your goals from treatment. I will ask about any accidents in the past and we will discuss your medical history. I will also want to understand your lifestyle factors – work, driving, leisure activities etc. This all helps me to view your problem in context i.e. to see you as a whole person and not just as a collection of aches and pains!

I will carry out an examination, looking at your structure and getting you to try various movements. I will ask you to remove some clothing for this to allow me to see exactly what’s going on. Pain you are experiencing in one part of your body may be linked to a problem elsewhere. For example, if you come to me with knee pain I will want to look at your feet, hips and back to track down any influencing strains or aggravating factors.

After taking your case history and doing some examination, I can then discuss your diagnosis with you and begin your treatment plan. Your treatment will be tailored specifically to your needs and may involve a combination of traditional osteopathic techniques, therapeutic massage work and/or cranial osteopathy. It will very much depend on you – what your body needs and how you feel about the different approaches.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

There are no hard and fast rules – everyone is different. Some people need only one or two treatments, others need several sessions. There are many influencing factors – what the problem is, how long you’ve had the problem, your general health, whether you follow the recommended rehabilitation exercises and so on. Wherever possible, I will try to let you know in advance how many sessions I think you will need.

Many people choose to come in periodically for a check-up/MOT after we have addressed their original problem. That’s fine; it can help to prevent flare-ups and recurrences, as well as enhancing your general well-being. Follow-up treatments are always optional. I will never insist you come back!

Can Osteopathy Always Help?

Osteopathy is helpful for a great many causes of aches and pains. There are occasions, however, when a visit to your doctor or hospital might be necessary before you begin treatment. If this is the case I will explain my concerns. Sometimes more information, such as an X-ray, is useful before a diagnosis can be made.

My View

I will always aim to keep you informed and involved with your treatment. If ever there is anything you don’t understand, I will be happy to try to explain. I find that patients recover more quickly and benefit more when they understand their diagnosis and “own” their treatment plan. I will almost certainly suggest some appropriate exercises, stretches or postural changes for you to do at home.
